About Prison Island
Prison Island, also known as Changuu or Kibandiko Island, is located approximately 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. This island lies three miles west of Unguja, the larger of the two main islands in the Zanzibar archipelago. In 1893, a British minister acquired the island and established a prison to detain rebellious slaves awaiting transport to the Middle East and Europe. Additionally, it served as a quarantine station for individuals with contagious diseases to prevent outbreaks among healthy populations.
By the 1910s, the need for a quarantine facility diminished, and the island transitioned into a recreational spot. Europeans in Zanzibar began renting bungalows and spending leisure time picnicking on the island. Today, Prison Island is a popular holiday destination and a natural reserve, offering visitors a scenic escape from Stone Town.
Giant Tortoises
One of the main attractions on Prison Island is the tortoise sanctuary, home to a significant population of Aldabra giant tortoises.
Historical Significance
The island features remnants of the old prison building, designed by Lloyd Mathews. The structure has weathered over the years, creating a unique blend of concrete and lush vegetation.
Visitors can take a break there, enjoying stunning sea views while spotting colorful peacocks and grazing antelopes nearby. The crystal-clear waters around the island invite guests for a refreshing swim.
Snorkeling Opportunities
Prison Island boasts winding brick pathways and a serene sandy beach, perfect for relaxation. For those interested in snorkeling, boat trips take visitors just offshore to explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with tropical fish and starfish.
Tour Rates
Motorboat rides to Prison Island from Stone Town take about 30 minutes and can accommodate up to 10 people. Tour companies typically offer all-inclusive packages covering snorkeling fees, entrance costs, boat rides, and refreshments. Average rates include:
Boat round trip for 10 people: USD 30-40

It's advisable to research and compare prices before booking. Visitors should also be aware of the occasionally choppy waters of the Indian Ocean, though conditions improve as you approach the island.
