Have you experienced a sunset that grabbed your attention? Pulled you right in and made you stop with whatever you were doing? Turned the sky into a brilliant display of color?

For us, sunset is so connected with a deeper part of self, and with just how awesome and amazing the world we live in really is! The bright hues, coupled with the comforting stillness of the surrounding sky., make for an image that shines beauty on everything it touches. And there’s something very calming about the setting sun in the northern part of Zanzibar.

Recently we’ve come to realize that we collect sunsets. Whether it’s walking from the market at the end of the workday or strolling the sands of an exotic beach, without even noticing it, we’ve managed to use a camera lens to take these evenings home with us.

This collection of cotton candy clouds and radiating hues represent some of the most beautiful moments and most wonderful memories in our lives. These snapshots have become sacred treasures in our hearts.

Time of sunsets in Zanzibar

Every sunset is different and breathtaking. We have captured the beautiful sunsets in Zanzibar residing in Michamvi, Nungwi, and Kendwa. You’ll probably ask when is the right time to catch the sunset in Zanzibar? Having an accommodation with a balcony facing the beach is perfect but if your option isn’t a beachfront, keep in mind that the sun goes down pretty early: +- 6:00 – 6:20 pm, depending on which month of the year you are having your holiday. Enjoy Zanzibar sunset without rushing and join the beach around 5 pm, in case you want to have dinner or grab a drink while enjoying the red sun of the island.

So where are the best sunsets?

Michamvi

Michamvi first grabbed our attention as this was the first sunset we saw after staying a long time in Bwejuu where you can normally see only sunrise at the ocean’s side. The place of Michamvi is different because of its calmness and different people. There we found so many kind, open minded, down-to-earth people who became friends. So, if you’re new to Zanzibar and looking for a complete escape, Michamvi is your home! Of course, everybody is different and everybody is looking for different things around the island. You will also find out that specific areas of the island feel different once you visit them and stay longer. If you ask our opinion – Michamvi’s relaxed vibe never made us question.

Nungwi

How about a different and louder sunset? Let’s go to Nungwi! This destination is for those who love enjoying sunsets while conversing with a company of friends, finding new connections, or playing volleyball with a bunch of strangers – Nungwi is “your go-to” destination. Here, a lot of tourists gather to see the most beautiful sunsets surrounded by loud music, great food, and the most beautiful colors of the sky. Look at this vibe: sunset cruises pass by while playing African music, tourists and locals playing football on the beach of Nungwi, Maasai finally sits down on the sand after a long and sunny working day.

If this kind of sunset is talking to you –  visit well-known restaurants and roof bars like rooftop bars at Z Hotel, Aluna Beach, Skybar Zanzibar by Nungwi Dreams, or Istanbul Restaurant and Bar… Limitless options! So, even if you are in love with one place, don’t hesitate to visit as many spots as you can, during your holiday time!

Kendwa

There are a few more options to watch the sunset… For example, while staying in Kendwa (another village next to Nungwi), we got to experience the famous Kendwa by Night sunset event organized by Zanzibar Water Sports and Kendwa Rocks every Saturday! Your private catamaran, professional DJ, cold drinks, and delicious food in the middle of the ocean! Does it sound great? This kind of fun time you can experience for 50USD per person. Probably not the best option for budget travelers but a great memory for those who are looking for a luxurious vibe!

Want to try a local option? Observe the sunset on the Dhow Cruise. A lot of locally built dhow boats are waiting for you and your friends! Here you won’t find a DJ but definitely will get the right vibe while listening to some local performers playing African drums and other instruments. The dow boat can fit more than 25-30 people at once although sometimes if the season is low, you can enjoy the same boat only for yourself and a couple more people. Surely, if you have two weeks on the island, it is worth trying a luxurious catamaran and a dhow boat to check out which of the two options works the best for your holiday!

The choice is yours!

These are just a few of the places you can visit when you come to Zanzibar, those activities will find you first as sunsets are something that locals advertise very well!
