Location of Paje

Paje is located off the coast of Tanzania, on the island of Zanzibar which can succinctly be summed up as Indian Ocean amazingness.

It is situated on the east coast of this fabulous island. Paje is essentially a huge, long strip of white sand bordered by a small village on one side and a collection of beachfront accommodation services and eateries, as well as turquoise waters on the other side.

There is a huge tidal range here and often a good breeze, therefore Paje is fast becoming a mecca for water sports. Paje is delightfully peaceful and quiet.

Getting to Paje

First of all, is to get to Stone Town, and then from Stone Town you can either get a private taxi – priced at around 25,000 Tanzanian Shillings and taking one hour or you can catch two local buses.

If you go for the local buses option to get to Paje, you actually have to change vehicles just outside of Stone Town, but this is straightforward. You may also ask for details at your accommodation in Stone Town.

Paje is known for water sports, including scuba diving. If you are looking to dive in Zanzibar, Paje is absolutely the place to go!

The warm, clear waters are a scuba divers’ heaven where you can see turtles, trumpet fish, starfish, octopus and moray eels among a heap of other colorful marine creatures.

Apart from scuba diving, there are also good surfing opportunities and excellent kite surfing opportunities here. In fact this stretch of sand is quickly becoming something of a kite surfing mecca! As such, it is obvious this place is going to take off; therefore, I definitely recommend getting in earlier

Things to take with you

1.      Bikini or swimsuit to enjoy the sea and sun.

4.      Sarong to cover your shoulders when you go into the village or making into a beach dress when you hit the sand, this is a great multi-purpose travel item for Zanzibar.

5.      Tanzania Lonely Planet which is incredibly useful for the maps and accommodation recommendations, the Tanzania Lonely Planet is a must-have for traveling in Zanzibar as well as elsewhere in the country.

A minimum of 4 days is honestly recommended. You could easily spend a week here if you are a beach person or looking to learn to kitesurf. Do not underestimate the power of Paje’s beautiful people.

Drinking and eating in Paje

There are a number of good local restaurants where you can eat. The place is well-stocked when it comes to keeping you watered and fed. The beats get going and the good times roll in with the ocean after dinner.

If you are sticking to a super tight budget then, your best option will be to head into the local village of Paje for snacks and supplies.

Lastly, what you need to know…

I would definitely consider Paje being safe but you have to be careful about walking along the beach at night. There is also the usual collection of beach boys hustling the sandy strip and they can be troublesome, who knows!

A lot of people in Zanzibar are predominantly practicing Muslims. This means that dress standards are conservative. On the beach, it is okay to wear bikinis and shorts, but if you head into the village I would suggest you dress properly and a bit more modesty.

You will likely see local women collecting seaweed at low tide in Paje to make soaps that are sold locally via a women’s cooperative. You can support them by buying their products!

Zanzibar vacation is a trip that combines history and culture with relaxation and a wide variety of activities therefore if you are visiting Zanzibar for a holiday you must make sure that Paje is on your list for the places you will visit. Hope you have a great time and happy travels, enjoy Paje!
